Gospatric, Earl of Northumbria

c. 1040–c. 1074

Gospatric was a northern magnate with connections to the old Northumbrian ruling families. Gospatric, Earl of Northumbria served as Earl of Northumbria. Gospatric, Earl of Northumbria is generally dated to c. 1040–c. 1074.

After Osulf’s death in 1067 he secured recognition from William the Conqueror as Earl of Northumbria, but the relationship between the new king and his northern earl remained unstable. Gospatric linked the old northern aristocracy with the rebellions that challenged Norman control of Northumbria between 1068 and 1069.

Paul Bernardi’s The Reckoning places Gospatric among the northern English magnates preparing renewed resistance to Norman rule in 1069. The fictional Oslac joins his kinsman as William the Conqueror sends Robert de Comines north to impose royal authority, and the destruction of Comines’s force at Durham becomes the opening of a wider rebellion. Gospatric’s presence gives the novel a historical link between the old Northumbrian aristocracy and the uprisings that would provoke William’s devastating response in the north.
