Heart of War
The second Loss of Eden novel follows the Rowland, Stratton and Gorse families through 1916 and 1917, when the First World War becomes a prolonged test of endurance. Men from different classes face the Somme and Passchendaele while conscription, industrial pressure and bereavement reshape the lives of those who remain in Britain.
Masters moves between battlefield and home front to show the same war from the perspective of officers, workers, wives and families whose pre-war social divisions no longer offer protection from loss. Births, deaths and altered expectations accumulate as the conflict erodes old certainties about class, gender and authority and carries the families towards the final year of war.
