Bhowani Junction
India, 1946. Victoria Jones, an Anglo-Indian woman returning to the railway community in which she grew up, finds herself caught between identities as British rule approaches its end. Bhowani is tense with strikes, nationalist politics and communal uncertainty, while Colonel Rodney Savage is ordered to keep vital rail communications moving through a town increasingly resistant to colonial authority.
Victoria’s relationships with fellow Anglo-Indian Patrick Taylor, Sikh Ranjit Kasel and Rodney Savage each offer a different possible future, but none can resolve the larger question of where her community belongs in an independent India. Against political violence and the final unraveling of the Raj, the novel makes personal allegiance, race and social status inseparable from the transfer of power.
