London, 2007. A group of people whose lives rarely intersect are drawn together in the week before a wealthy dinner party. Their worlds include hedge-fund speculation, law, professional football, education, transport, addiction and religious extremism, each revealing a different part of a city increasingly mediated by money and technology.

As the financial system approaches crisis, private ambitions and obsessions begin to collide. The novel uses satire, suspense and multiple viewpoints to examine inequality, virtual life and the moral distance between those who profit from modern institutions and those who are trapped inside them.
