Austrian Circus Culture and Lipizzaner Recovery

Austria’s equestrian institutions emerged from World War II after evacuation, military requisition and the danger that bloodlines and trained horses would be dispersed. The Spanish Riding School rebuilt its international reputation under Alois Podhajsky, while Lipizzaners also appeared in touring demonstrations and popular culture.

Travelling circuses remained important employers of riders, animal trainers, musicians and seasonal workers. Their movement across borders and resort towns created a distinctive social world in which highly skilled performance coexisted with insecure labour and commercial pressure.

Airs Above the Ground combines this post-war circus culture with the prestige of the Lipizzaners. The historical setting gives its fictional conspiracy a credible network of trainers, performers, temporary camps and international horse transport.
