In 1900 Ivy Cromartie Stranahan joins her husband Frank at a remote trading post on Florida’s New River and becomes one of the region’s first English-speaking teachers. Her work with Seminole children grows into advocacy, even as tribal leaders distrust the missionary assumptions and government pressures surrounding education.
Ivy’s faith sustains her through bereavement, her husband’s suicide and years of public service, but the novel also exposes the limits of protection offered by outsiders. Her deepest commitment emerges when she learns to listen, represent Seminole concerns and persevere without treating conversion as a substitute for justice.
