Ivy Cromartie Stranahan was an American teacher, suffragist and civic organiser who became closely identified with the early development of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Born in 1881, she arrived in the settlement as a young schoolteacher and later married the trader and businessman Frank Stranahan.
Stranahan became a long-term advocate for Seminole communities in southern Florida, supporting education, housing and land rights and working through organisations including the Friends of the Florida Seminoles. She also participated in the Florida suffrage movement and remained active in local philanthropy until her death in 1971.
In Jane Kirkpatrick’s Mystic Sweet Communion, in 1900 Ivy Cromartie Stranahan joins her husband Frank at a remote trading post on Florida’s New River and becomes one of the region’s first English-speaking teachers.
