War

First Chimurenga, 1896–1897

1896–1897

The First Chimurenga began with Ndebele resistance in Matabeleland and spread through Shona regions of Mashonaland. Grievances included land seizure, taxation, forced labour, cattle losses and the destruction of political authority.

Company forces, settlers and imperial troops used fortified positions, mounted columns and reprisals to suppress the uprisings. The conflict became a foundational memory of later Zimbabwean nationalism.

This is the most specific context for fiction about the 1896–1897 uprisings, settler sieges and resistance to company rule.
