Siege of Mafeking

Mafeking was surrounded by Boer forces soon after the outbreak of the Second Boer War. Colonel Robert Baden-Powell organised a mixed military and civilian defence while supplies, medical care and morale steadily deteriorated.

Raids, artillery fire and improvised defences sustained the town until a British relief column arrived in May 1900. The siege became a major event in British imperial reporting and public celebration.
