The Society of United Irishmen developed from reform politics into a revolutionary movement influenced by the American and French Revolutions. Government repression and failed attempts to coordinate foreign support preceded open rebellion in 1798, with major fighting in several parts of Ireland.
The uprising was defeated with severe violence on both sides and was followed by further repression and political change culminating in the Act of Union.
