Tolui

Tolui was the youngest son of Genghis Khan and Börte and later served as regent of the Mongol Empire. He participated in the Mongol conquests and became the ancestor of the Toluid line that produced Möngke, Kublai and Hulagu.

Tolui was the youngest son of Genghis Khan and Börte and commanded major forces during the Mongol conquests. After Genghis Khan’s death he acted as regent until Ögedei’s accession, and his sons Möngke, Kublai, Hulagu and Ariq Böke later dominated Mongol imperial politics.

Jin Yong’s A Hero Born places Tolui among the children and commanders of Temüjin’s Mongol household in which the young Guo Jing is raised, making the prince part of Guo’s earliest friendships and obligations. A Heart Divided returns to those Mongol ties when Guo Jing must choose between the people who formed him and the Chinese homeland threatened by their expansion, with Tolui representing the personal bonds that make that decision more painful than a simple political choice.
