Subhas Chandra Bose follows the nationalist leader who rejected gradual constitutional politics and sought foreign assistance to overthrow British rule. It traces his early activism, repeated imprisonment, rise within the Indian National Congress and conflict with Gandhi and the party leadership.

The biography follows Bose’s escape from India, contacts with Germany and leadership of the Indian National Army under Japanese sponsorship. It assesses the military campaign in Burma and India, his authoritarian political ideas and the continuing controversy surrounding his alliances and death.

Bose’s wartime strategy remains controversial because opposition to British rule led him to seek assistance from Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. His later memory in India reflects both admiration for uncompromising anti-colonial resistance and continuing debate over the political means he accepted.
