Samurai History traces Japan’s warrior class from its emergence in the medieval period to its political dominance under the shogunates and eventual abolition during the Meiji Restoration. It examines warfare, service to powerful lords, castle society, weapons and changing ideas of loyalty and martial conduct. The book also distinguishes the historical samurai from later romantic images, showing how their role changed as Japan moved from civil war to long periods of peace.

The class changes markedly across time. Medieval warriors gain authority through military service and landed ties, whereas Tokugawa peace increasingly turns many samurai into administrators, scholars and stipended retainers. The Meiji abolition of hereditary status therefore ends an institution already transformed from its battlefield origins, helping explain why later bushidō ideals only partly reflect earlier samurai practice.
