In 1939 Alma Belasco is sent from Poland to relatives in San Francisco, escaping Nazi persecution but losing the world of her childhood. At the Belasco estate she forms a lasting bond with Ichimei Fukuda, the son of the family’s Japanese American gardener.
Their relationship is divided by wartime incarceration, racial prejudice, family expectation and the different lives they build after 1945. Decades later, Alma’s grandson and a care worker try to understand the letters and absences surrounding her past. The novel turns a concealed love affair into a history of displacement, internment and memory.
