Jeremy Black (born 1955) is a British historian and author known for the exceptional breadth of his work on British, European and global history. Educated at Cambridge and Oxford, he taught at Durham University before becoming Professor of History at the University of Exeter in 1996, where he is now Professor Emeritus. Black has written extensively on diplomatic, political, military and cultural history, with particular expertise in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. He has also been a major contributor to the study of military history and the history of cartography, frequently arguing against interpretations that treat European historical development as the inevitable model for the rest of the world.

Black is an exceptionally prolific author, with books ranging from detailed studies of individual monarchs and wars to broad surveys of world history. His works include George II: Puppet of the Politicians?, A History of the British Isles, Maps and History, Why Wars Happen and Rethinking Military History, alongside studies of warfare, diplomacy, empire and eighteenth-century Britain. His writing frequently places British events within their wider European and global contexts, examining the interaction between governments, military power, geography and international relations. The scale of his output has made him one of the most widely published British historians of his generation, particularly valuable for readers interested in Georgian Britain, warfare and the development of the modern international order.
