Anglo-Scottish Campaign of 1385

As part of the wider conflict between England and France, Jean de Vienne brought French knights, money and equipment to Scotland in 1385. Scottish and French forces crossed the border, but disagreements over strategy and supply limited their campaign.

Richard II answered with a large royal army that advanced to Edinburgh and burned settlements while the Scots avoided decisive battle and removed provisions. Scottish forces retaliated through raids in western and northern England before the armies withdrew.

The Warlord Earl follows Archibald Douglas’s participation, including the western movement towards Carlisle, and portrays the tension between French expectations and the defensive strategy required to preserve Scotland.
