Italian Front of World War I

The Italian Front of World War I began when Italy entered the conflict against Austria-Hungary in May 1915. Fighting extended from the high Alpine passes to the Isonzo valley and the Adriatic approaches, forcing armies to operate across mountains, rivers and exposed limestone plateaus. Repeated Italian offensives produced enormous casualties without a decisive breakthrough.

The front changed dramatically after the Central Powers’ victory at Caporetto in October 1917. The Italian army retreated towards the Piave amid military collapse, civilian displacement and summary discipline, before stabilising and eventually defeating Austria-Hungary at Vittorio Veneto in 1918.

For historical fiction, the Italian Front provides a setting distinct from the trenches of France and Flanders: ambulance services, mountain warfare, multinational armies, retreat, desertion and the movement of wounded soldiers through northern Italian hospitals. Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms is one of its defining literary treatments.
