Transfer of Transylvania to Romania, 1918–1920

At the end of World War I, Romanian political and military authority expanded into Transylvania as Austria-Hungary disintegrated. Romanian representatives proclaimed union in December 1918, while Hungarian communities and landowners faced an abrupt change of state, administration and political power.

The Treaty of Trianon in June 1920 internationally confirmed most of the transfer. The settlement created enduring disputes over borders, minority rights, landholding and national identity across the region.

Pimpernel and Rosemary presents this transformation largely through disaffected Hungarian aristocrats and a British journalist invited to assess Romanian rule. The novel’s viewpoint is partisan, but its intrigue depends on the real post-war transfer and the insecurity it produced.
