Carausian Revolt and the Britannic Empire

In 286 the naval commander Carausius declared himself emperor in Britain and northern Gaul after conflict with the imperial authorities. His regime controlled the Channel, issued its own coinage and presented itself as a legitimate Roman government rather than a rejection of Roman identity.

Carausius was murdered by his finance officer Allectus in 293. Constantius Chlorus then recovered the continental territories and invaded Britain in 296, defeating Allectus and restoring the province to central imperial rule. The episode exposed both Britain’s strategic independence and its continuing attachment to Roman institutions.

Rosemary Sutcliff’s The Silver Branch places its fictional protagonists within the fall of Carausius and resistance to Allectus.
