Historical person
Anne Fairfax
1617/18–1665
Anne Fairfax, born Anne de Vere, was the wife of Parliamentary commander Thomas Fairfax and accompanied him during parts of the Civil War. Her surviving association with Fairfax’s campaigns offers a domestic perspective on the lives surrounding high command.
The Rider of the White Horse makes Anne the principal emotional viewpoint on her husband’s campaigns. Anne, her marriage and travel with Fairfax are historical; the continuous private narrative is fictional reconstruction.
