Camp life was governed by terror, starvation, disease, family separation and systematic dehumanisation. The physical layout, guarded compounds and constant surveillance sharply limited movement, particularly for children selected for immediate death.
Fiction set beside or within Auschwitz requires careful distinction between symbolic narrative and documented conditions. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a fable with historically implausible premises and should not be treated as an accurate account of the camp.
