Huai River Plains, 1345. A starving girl is told that her fate is nothing, while her brother Zhu Chongba is promised greatness. The identity gives Zhu a route to food and survival, but the monastery’s destruction during the unrest against Mongol rule pushes her into the Red Turban armies, where intelligence, audacity and an absolute refusal to disappear carry her towards military command.
The novel reimagines the early career of Zhu Yuanzhang, the peasant rebel who became the Hongwu Emperor and founded the Ming dynasty. Parker-Chan changes the historical ruler’s gender and gives the Mandate of Heaven a supernatural presence, using Zhu’s ascent and her rivalry with the eunuch general Ouyang to examine gendered expectations, bodily autonomy, desire and the moral cost of ambition. Its campaigns and factional struggles draw on the fall of the Yuan dynasty without presenting the story as a conventional biography.
