Raiders from the North

Ferghana, 1494. Twelve-year-old Babur inherits a vulnerable Central Asian kingdom and the burden of descent from Timur and Chagatai Khan. Rival princes, Uzbek armies and betrayal within his own household repeatedly strip him of territory, but defeat strengthens his determination to recover Samarkand and establish a realm worthy of his ancestors.

Driven south through Kabul and across the mountain passes, Babur turns towards India when his ambitions in Central Asia become impossible to sustain. The campaign culminates in the defeat of the Delhi Sultanate and the creation of a new imperial dynasty. The novel presents conquest through Babur’s resilience, appetite for glory and growing ability to hold a diverse army together.

Babur’s repeated losses are central to his later success. Unable to secure Samarkand permanently, he learns to rebuild after defeat, recruit across different communities and adapt his ambitions to available opportunities. The move toward India is therefore not a simple expansion of an established empire but the result of a Central Asian prince redirecting a career that has repeatedly failed in its original goal.
