Ravenheart

by David Gemmel Book 3 in the Rigante series.

First published 2001

4.7(2,889)

Eight centuries after Connavar and Bane, the Rigante live under Varlish rule and are losing their land, language and traditions. Kaelin Ring grows up amid occupation and injustice, while the giant Jaim Grymauch becomes a protector whose courage gives others permission to resist.

As repression intensifies, separate acts of defiance begin to form a rebellion. Ancient magic survives at the edge of the conquered culture, but the future depends on ordinary people accepting extraordinary risks. One man will become Ravenheart, and another will carry the struggle into the next stage of war.

Varlish occupation is presented as cultural as well as political domination. Land seizure matters because it disrupts kinship and livelihood, while pressure on language and custom threatens the memory through which the Rigante understand themselves. Resistance therefore grows from ordinary acts of preservation before it becomes organised rebellion, giving the conflict a social depth beyond the struggles of individual champions.
