Theoderic

Theoderic: Imitation of an Emperor traces the rise of Theoderic Amalo as the western Roman Empire disintegrates and military rulers compete for its remains. Shaped by his youth as a hostage at Constantinople, Theoderic becomes both an Ostrogothic war leader and a Roman imperial officer, moving through the shifting politics and battlefields of the Balkans before Emperor Zeno directs him against Odoacer in Italy. The campaign culminates in the long struggle for Ravenna and Theoderic’s establishment as ruler of the peninsula.

Once in power, Theoderic attempts to reconcile Gothic military authority with the institutions and prestige of Roman government. His court preserves senators, administrators and classical learning while remaining divided by ethnicity, religion and conflicting ideas of legitimacy. Through figures including Zeno, Odoacer and Boethius, the novel examines the central contradiction of Theoderic’s career: a king labelled a barbarian who sought to govern as Rome’s protector and imperial successor, yet whose final years were darkened by suspicion, treason trials and the fragility of the political order he had built.
