His employers then betray him with stolen banknotes, ensuring that the police pursue the killer while the men who commissioned the crime remain protected by wealth and political influence.
Raven follows the payment trail through England and takes the chorus girl Anne Crowder as a reluctant hostage. Her fiancé, Detective Jimmy Mather, leads the pursuit, but Anne gradually understands that the assassination is connected to industrial profit and the approach of war. The novel was published in the United States as This Gun for Hire.
