The Devil’s Acolyte
First published 2002
Tavistock, autumn 1322. Wine disappears from the abbey’s stores and a man is found dead on the moors, recalling a local story in which novices were destroyed after stealing from an abbot. Further losses suggest that the legend is being deliberately revived.
Simon and Baldwin investigate the abbey community and a group linked by an older crime on the northern border. The mystery uses religious fear and collective guilt to connect past violence with present theft, asking whether the supposed repetition is supernatural punishment or a human attempt to control witnesses.
