Book
A Moorland Hanging
First published 1996
Devon, 1318. Peter Bruther escapes his lord’s control by claiming the legal privileges granted to Dartmoor tin miners. His new status threatens landowner Sir William Beauscyr, angers other miners and suggests a route to freedom that further serfs might follow. Peter is then found hanging from a tree.
Simon and Baldwin must investigate while preventing conflict between the Beauscyr household and the mining community. The murder turns customary law, labour and protection payments into motives, showing how a local death can challenge the distribution of power across an entire manor and moorland economy.
