The Gentleman Detective Mysteries

The Gentleman Detective Mysteries follow retired Colonel Julius Bainbridge and his niece Victoria as they investigate crime in Norwich and the surrounding countryside between 1898 and 1900. Bainbridge brings military experience, patience and social access to each case, while Victoria’s independence and determination make her an increasingly capable partner rather than a passive assistant.

The sequence ranges across boxing, religious cults, burglary, arson, commercial fraud, country houses and apparent supernatural curses. Beneath the individual mysteries runs Bainbridge’s unresolved search for the truth about the murder of his closest friend, Houston Fairchild, a case that reaches its conclusion in the seventeenth volume.
