Jamestown Colony
1607–1699 CE
Jamestown was founded in 1607 by English settlers in Virginia. Disease, hunger, conflict with Powhatan peoples, weak leadership and the search for profit nearly destroyed the colony. Tobacco eventually gave the settlement an economic base but also deepened labour exploitation.
Jamestown mattered because it became a foundation point for English colonisation in North America. Its history includes survival, Indigenous diplomacy, violence, forced labour and the early growth of plantation society. It offers fiction a setting of hunger, ambition, cultural misunderstanding and the brutal improvisation of empire.
