Battle of Stalingrad
1942–1943 CE
The Battle of Stalingrad was fought from 1942 into early 1943 as German and Axis forces attempted to seize the city on the Volga and Soviet armies fought to hold it. Urban combat destroyed much of Stalingrad before Operation Uranus encircled the German Sixth Army and forced its eventual surrender.
The battle mattered because it destroyed a major German field army and became a decisive psychological and strategic turning point on the Eastern Front. Its scale also makes it a setting for stories about ruined cities, supply failure, snipers, encirclement, captivity and the endurance of soldiers and civilians.
