Post-war Ireland and the Troubles is dated here from the Republic of Ireland Act taking effect in 1949 to the political settlement that followed the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. The Republic remained economically weak and socially conservative for much of the mid-century, while Northern Ireland retained a unionist-dominated political system marked by discrimination and sectarian division.
Civil-rights protest in Northern Ireland during the late 1960s gave way to the Troubles, involving republican and loyalist paramilitaries, British military deployment, imprisonment and repeated civilian deaths. Ceasefires and negotiation in the 1990s produced the Good Friday Agreement and a new framework for power-sharing and cross-border institutions.
