The Cossack uprising expands into a struggle involving the armies of the Commonwealth, Khmelnytsky’s forces and Crimean Tatar cavalry. Jan Skrzetuski serves under Prince Jeremi Wiśniowiecki while trying to learn whether Helena has survived the destruction around Rozłogi. Bohun continues to pursue her, and Zagłoba’s schemes become essential to keeping her beyond his control as towns, estates and military camps change hands.

The middle volume widens the novel from personal rivalry to the political and military failures of the Commonwealth. Commanders argue over strategy, noble levies prove unreliable and civilians are caught between advancing armies and retaliatory violence. Skrzetuski, Wołodyjowski and their companions remain bound by friendship, but the separation of the lovers and the scale of the rebellion make individual courage increasingly powerless against the movement of war.
