Takashi Matsuoka

Takashi Matsuoka is a Japanese-American author best known for historical novels set during the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate and Japan’s difficult encounter with the Western world. Raised in Hawaii, he worked at a Zen Buddhist temple in Honolulu before becoming a full-time writer. His fiction combines political conflict, samurai culture and family history with themes of cultural exchange, loyalty and resistance to change.

Matsuoka’s debut novel, Cloud of Sparrows, is set principally in 1861 and follows a Japanese lord whose clan becomes entangled with American missionaries, rival warriors and the forces threatening the established order. Its sequel, Autumn Bridge, expands the history of the fictional Okumichi clan across several centuries, connecting medieval Japan with the upheavals of the nineteenth century. The novels are noted for their broad historical scope, interwoven timelines and mixture of romance, intrigue and samurai adventure.
