Greek War of Independence

The Greek War of Independence began in 1821 with revolts against Ottoman rule in the Peloponnese and other regions. Greek forces created provisional governments but also faced internal division, while Ottoman and Egyptian armies responded with sieges, reprisals and campaigns that threatened to suppress the revolt.

European sympathy for the Greek cause combined with strategic rivalry among Britain, France and Russia. The three powers agreed to impose an armistice in 1827, and their intervention at Navarino destroyed the Ottoman-Egyptian fleet. Further diplomacy and the Russo-Turkish War helped establish an autonomous and then independent Greek state by 1830.
