Rise of the Zulu Kingdom and the Mfecane

During the early nineteenth century, new states and military systems emerged across southeastern Africa. Shaka became ruler of the Zulu kingdom around 1816 and expanded its authority through alliance, incorporation and warfare, creating a powerful centralised polity by the time of his assassination in 1828.
The wider upheaval is often described as the Mfecane or Difaqane and involved conflict, political consolidation, displacement and forced migration across a region extending far beyond the Zulu kingdom. Historians have challenged older accounts that attributed every movement or act of violence to Shaka alone, emphasising environmental pressure, trade, slaving, colonial expansion and the choices of many African states and leaders.
