Peterloo Massacre

The Peterloo Massacre took place on 16 August 1819 at St Peter’s Field in Manchester. A large crowd had gathered to demand parliamentary reform when local authorities sent cavalry into the meeting. Several people were killed and many were injured.

Peterloo mattered because it became a symbol of repression, class injustice and the demand for political representation. It exposed the gap between an industrialising population and an unreformed political system. The event intensified debates over free speech, assembly and state violence.

Peterloo is one of the strongest late Georgian settings for novels about reform, journalism, working-class life and political fear. It belongs beside fiction about industrial unrest rather than conventional Regency romance, though the two worlds existed at the same time.
