Battle of Saratoga

The Battles of Saratoga in 1777 ended with the surrender of British General John Burgoyne’s army in northern New York. The campaign aimed to cut New England off from the other colonies but failed. American victory gave the rebellion a major strategic and diplomatic success.

Saratoga mattered because it helped persuade France that the American cause could survive and win. French alliance changed the scale and danger of the war for Britain. The battle also showed how geography, supply, militia pressure and command decisions could decide a campaign.

Saratoga offers fiction a turning-point setting with scouts, militia, regular troops, loyalists and uncertain civilians. It works for the same Revolutionary War readership as Bernard Cornwell’s Redcoat, while also connecting to the broader Atlantic world used in Diana Gabaldon’s later Outlander novels.
