Rescue of Jewish Children in Occupied France, 1940–1944

After France’s defeat in 1940, German occupation and the collaborating Vichy government imposed antisemitic laws, internment and property seizures. Mass roundups and deportations accelerated in 1942, placing both French and refugee Jewish children in immediate danger of transport to Auschwitz.

The Œuvre de Secours aux Enfants, Jewish scouting and youth movements, local resistance groups, clergy and private households created hiding places, children’s homes, false papers and escape routes. Some children were removed from internment camps or moved across the Swiss and Spanish borders. Historians estimate that organised and local rescue efforts saved roughly 12,000 to 15,000 Jewish children in France.
