Meuse–Argonne Offensive
26 September–11 November 1918
On 26 September 1918, the American First Army attacked between the Meuse River and the Argonne Forest as part of the Allied final offensives on the Western Front. Difficult terrain, fortified German positions and inexperienced units slowed the advance.
John J. Pershing’s forces sustained heavy casualties while gradually breaking the German defensive system. The operation continued until the armistice on 11 November and involved more American troops than any earlier United States battle.
