Hoover Dam Construction

1931–1936

Construction of the great dam at Black Canyon began in 1931 during the Great Depression. Thousands of workers came to the Nevada-Arizona border for employment on tunnels, diversion works, concrete structures and the new settlement of Boulder City.

The project combined immense engineering ambition with dangerous working conditions, industrial discipline and rapid social change around Las Vegas and the Colorado River.
