Restoration Oxford and Early Experimental Science
1660–1665
After the restoration of Charles II in 1660, Oxford remained shaped by Royalist loyalties, memories of Parliamentarian rule and disputes over religion and university authority. Scholars who had served opposing regimes continued to work within the same colleges and political networks.
Oxford natural philosophers investigated circulation, respiration, chemistry and the possibility of transfusion. Their correspondence and experiments helped form the intellectual culture surrounding the Royal Society, chartered in 1662, while medicine remained entangled with patronage, reputation and theological argument.
