Mary, Queen of Scots and the Darnley Crisis, 1565–1567

Mary, Queen of Scots and the Darnley Crisis covers the period from Mary’s marriage to Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, in July 1565 to his murder at Kirk o’ Field in February 1567. The marriage intensified rivalry among Scottish nobles, alarmed Elizabeth I because of the couple’s combined dynastic claim, and was followed by rebellion, the murder of David Rizzio and the birth of the future James VI.

The crisis mattered because personal conflict inside the royal marriage became inseparable from factional politics and confessional division.
