Mary Seton is one of the four girls chosen to accompany the child Mary, Queen of Scots, to France. Her identity is formed by service to a queen whose marriage, widowhood and return to Scotland place both mistress and attendants inside a court divided by religion and noble rivalry. Seton’s loyalty gives her intimate access to Mary’s private fears while denying her the freedom to shape an independent life.
The queen’s marriages to Lord Darnley and the Earl of Bothwell lead towards murder, rebellion, abdication and captivity. Seton remains with her through the crisis and later imprisonment in England, where devotion becomes a test of endurance rather than courtly honour. By centring a woman usually visible only at the edge of the record, the novel explores friendship, duty and the personal cost of serving a ruler whose cause is steadily collapsing.
