The Suffolk Trilogy

The Suffolk Trilogy follows the Tallboys family and their precarious holding at Knight’s Acre in fifteenth-century Suffolk. Knight’s Acre introduces Sir Godfrey Tallboys, a successful knight-errant whose ambitions depend on tournaments, military service and the hope of securing a permanent home for his wife Sybilla. The Homecoming brings him back from years of captivity in Spain with Tana, the Moorish woman who saved his life, while The Lonely Furrow shifts the burden of survival to the next generation.
Across the three novels, the glamour of knighthood is repeatedly tested against the harder realities of land, debt, inheritance, farm work, marriage and the instability of late Plantagenet England. The sequence moves from Lancastrian society toward the Yorkist monarchy and the Wars of the Roses, but Lofts keeps national politics at the edge of household decisions, showing how war and court power alter the prospects of people whose main struggle is to preserve a home and family.
