Oldenbarnevelt Conspiracy against Maurice of Nassau, 1623

After the execution of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt in 1619, political and religious opponents of Maurice of Nassau remained embittered. In early 1623 a group including Reinier and Willem van Oldenbarnevelt hired men to attack the stadtholder near Rijswijk.

The plot was exposed before it could be carried out. Reinier was arrested and executed, while Willem, Lord of Stoutenburg, escaped to the Spanish Netherlands. The failed conspiracy deepened the connection between Remonstrant opposition, dynastic revenge and the continuing war with Spain.

The Laughing Cavalier freely reshapes these events, making Willem van Oldenbarnevelt the organiser of a plot overheard by Gilda Beresteyn and opposed by the fictional adventurer Diogenes. The historical conspiracy supplies the novel’s central danger, though its private participants and rescue plot are invented.
