Dutch East India Company, 1602–1799

The Dutch East India Company, or VOC, was founded in 1602 as a chartered corporation with authority to trade, negotiate treaties, wage war and administer territory in Asia. Its commercial network linked the Netherlands with the Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia, Japan and southern Africa.

The company sought monopolies in spices and other commodities through fortified ports, naval power and coercive agreements. Batavia became its principal Asian centre, while violence and forced production accompanied the movement of goods, capital and people.

The VOC was dissolved in 1799 after financial and administrative decline. Its institutions and territorial claims passed into the Dutch colonial state, leaving a major legacy in Indonesia and global corporate history.
