Samson

Biblical period of the judges

Samson is a judge and strongman in the Hebrew Bible whose story is told in the Book of Judges. Dedicated as a Nazirite from birth, he is portrayed as possessing extraordinary strength and repeatedly fighting the Philistines during a period of conflict between them and the Israelites.

His relationship with Delilah leads to the disclosure that his uncut hair symbolises his Nazirite dedication; after his capture and blinding, Samson destroys the Philistine temple where he is being displayed, killing himself and many of his captors.

In Angela Hunt’s Delilah, When she encounters Samson, the feared Hebrew champion whose strength threatens Philistine power, attraction and calculation become inseparable: the rulers of the cities offer her the means to transform her life if she can discover his secret.
