Roman Karmen

Roman Karmen was a Soviet documentary filmmaker and war correspondent who recorded major conflicts from the Spanish Civil War to the Second World War and Vietnam. His work combined frontline footage with the ideological demands of Soviet state cinema.

Karmen filmed the siege of Leningrad, the battle for Berlin and the Nuremberg trials, helping shape Soviet visual memory of war. His documentaries are valuable historical records but must also be read as carefully constructed propaganda.

William T. Vollmann’s Europe Central gives Roman Karmen a distinct role in its portrait of artists working under dictatorship.
