Roland Ward Jones served as a Confederate officer and sharpshooter from Mississippi. He was severely wounded in the leg during the Battle of Franklin and carried to Carnton, where the McGavock home had become a field hospital. His recovery continued for months and later included confinement in a Federal hospital in Nashville.
At Carnton he met governess Elizabeth Clouston, who helped nurse the wounded. Their letters developed into a courtship, and they married in December 1865 before settling in Mississippi. The correspondence supplied the principal historical foundation for Tamera Alexander’s With This Pledge.
